A common question we get is asked when care providers call In Motion Dentists is whether or not, as a mobile dentist, our dentists are trained, licensed, and authorized to provide anesthetic options. The answer is a resounding, “Yes!” Our dentists are able to provide a variety of sedation dentistry options which, so long as they don’t interfere with a patient’s medications, can be used to provide optimal comfort during in-home dental care.

The Importance of Knowing the Patient’s Full Medical History

It’s always important for a dentist to know his or her patient’s medical history. It’s especially important for mobile dentists like the Inland Empire’s In Motion Dentists to have a complete medical history, including prescription and over-the-counter medications lists because many of thier home-bound or nursing home resident patients take several medications a day. While most medications won’t interact with anesthetic options, certain health conditions, such as diabetes, can complicate oral health and our dentists need to have all medical information available to put together the best treatment plan possible for your loved one.

Choosing Anesthetic Options

When it comes to deciding which anesthetic option to provide his in-home and nursing home patients, your dentist will prefer to provide the least restrictive option feasible. However, we know that some patients will require stronger sedatives either due to the complexity of a dental procedure being performed, special needs, or behaviors that may make them more nervous or even uncooperative during dental procedures.

As mobile dentists, we provide Inland Empire patients with the following types of anesthetics:

• Local anesthesia, which is typically injected at the treatment site to numb the area that is being worked on. A numbing agent is applied before the injection for better comfort for your loved one. Local anesthesia is common for patients who are receiving dental treatments such as a filling or deep cleaning.
• Oral sedation is also provided to help patients relax prior to and during their dental visit. Allowing a patient that has high anxiety to dental care to take an oral sedative one hour prior to their dental appointment often will help the patient relax just enough to take the edge off and complete their dental care in the most comfortable way.
• IV or GA sedation, which you and your dentist may select for your loved one for a variety of reasons, including dental anxiety, previous history of being uncooperative for dentists (even mobile dentists with special needs training like Dr. Banner), or due to the complexity of a procedure, such as a root canal. If your loved one needs IV or GA sedation we will see them at one of our contracted surgical centers or hospitals.
